The National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico is an observance unlike any other. In celebration of San Juan de Dios, patron saint of firework-makers, fiery festivities engulf the town for ten days. Artisans show off their virtuosity, up-and-comers create their own rowdy lo-fi combustibles, and teams build larger-than-life papier-mâché bulls to parade into the town square – and blow up. Most of Tultepec’s residents work in fireworks, making the festival more than revelry for revelry’s sake. Plunging headlong into the fire, Jakovleski’s immersive, ecstatic film honours the spirit of Tultepec’s community and celebrates celebration itself.
