One of China’s most celebrated and influential fiction directors, Wang Xiaoshuai (Beijing Bicycle; Shanghai Dreams; So Long, My Son), documents the transformation of his homeland and its people. Shooting over 10 years, Wang traverses the country to capture factory employees, farmers, fishermen, construction workers, train passengers, beachside tourists, students, and more, all in motionless poses. But in a fitting parallel with contemporary Chinese life, nothing truly remains static. The result is a fascinating, moving portrait that captures a country, a population and a society; a sensory experience of the Chinese New Wave.
