Faces Places (Visages Villages) is a funny and poignant elegy about the richness of life, art and friendship by legendary filmmaker Agnès Varda and street artist JR. She is almost 90, he is 34. Yet despite the gap in years, both share a passion for the unknown and a curiosity for the seemingly ordinary. As our unlikely duo embarks on a road trip around France in JR’s photographic truck, they create larger-than life installations – a village postman, forgotten coal miners, wives of dockworkers – revealing the richness of life that exists everywhere, in everyone, if only we looked hard enough. “It’s surprising. And art is meant to surprise us,” comments a passer-by on one of our duo’s installations, capturing perfectly the essence of their ambitions.
