For Ahkeem follows Black teenager Daje Shelton as she comes of age in a rough part of St. Louis, not far from Ferguson, where Michael Brown was shot and killed by police in August 2014. After a school fight lands Daje in a court-supervised alternative high school, she’s determined to turn things around and make a better future for herself. But focusing on school is tough as she loses multiple friends to gun violence, falls in love for the first time, and becomes pregnant. Through Daje’s intimate story, Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Jeremy S. Levine and Landon Van Soest illuminate the challenges that many Black youth face in America today, and witness the strength, resilience, and determination it takes to survive.
