Uncertain whether it would be a film, Akerman began filming while teaching in Tel Aviv and living alone in a rented apartment. Unfolding in a series of fixed, inquisitive shots, Akerman peers through blinds at neighbours as she ruminates on her family, Jewish identity, and daily life. Là-bas is arguably both the most fragile and most powerful of Akerman’s works.
