At the age of 14, Laura Dekker set off on a two-year voyage aiming to become the youngest teenager to sail around the world solo. Appalled by her parents’ decision to allow her to sail, Dutch courts placed Laura under state guardianship, grounding her for ten months. Finally at sea, Laura turns to the camera for company, laying her experience bare with frank video diary entries. Filmmaker Jillian Schlesinger has constructed a fresh and inspiring coming-of-age story, bounded by two years, an endless sea, and the 40-foot deck of Laura’s trusted boat Guppy. Maidentrip profiles an individual’s raw determination in striving for one of the greatest goals imaginable.
