In Maura Axelrod’s playful documentary, we meet one of the most successful and controversial artists of our time. Maurizio Cattelan’s work is designed to provoke and offend – and that it does: he depicts a meteorite hitting the Pope, and duct-tapes a gallerist to a wall until the man faints. “The more he abuses people, the more popular he becomes,” as one subject says. The film documents Maurizio from his early days in poverty to his recent career-capping retrospective at the Guggenheim, with many twists along the way.
