It sounds like a romantic Euro-comedy as conceived by foreign policy reporters: Italian journalists disguise their refugee friends from Syria as a wedding party and try to spirit them across various European borders to Sweden (which is more likely to accept asylum claims). On The Bride’s Side succeeds as a portrait of the war and terror the refugees have fled, of the increasingly harsh response of European states to a growing refugee crisis (which reveals Australia’s own media-produced “crisis” as the joke that it is) and of the bravery and compassion of the journalists / filmmakers, who risked prison sentences to make the journey.
