Luana Muniz, known as the Queen of Lapa, was one of Brazil’s most famous transgender personalities: a larger- than-life actress, cabaret performer, proud sex worker, and activist since the age of 11. Now 59, she’s shaping a new reality in her “hostel”, housing the next generation of trans sex workers in Rio de Janeiro. Edgy, humorous, tender, and relevant in an effortless way, Queen of Lapa explores the women’s day-to-day lives, their quests for love, housemate rivalries, and notions about body image – all under matriarch Muniz’s watchful and guiding eye – in a city that’s a dangerous home for its LGBTQ community.
