Across walls, fences, and alleys, rats not only expose our boundaries of separation but make homes in them. Rat Film takes the perspective of our rodent nemeses – as well as the humans that love them, live with them, and kill them – to explore the history of Baltimore. Theo Anthony’s feature-length film debut is as fascinating as it is confronting. With a style reminiscent of his mentor Werner Herzog, Anthony’s off-kilter approach covers everything from the gruesome results of rat research at Johns Hopkins University in the 1950s to Baltimore’s history of racial inequality. Electronic-music wizard Dan Deacon, himself a Baltimore native, provides the score.
