Social Issues and the Art of Cinema: Panel Discussion
Directors Erick Stoll and Giovanni Totaro will discuss the impact documentary film can have on influencing social policy. Co-directed by Stoll and Chase Whiteside, América (playing at Antenna 2018) is an uplifting and sensitive portrait about a charismatic 93-year old, and the three grandsons who care for her. The film is a timely response to the hotly debated issue of aged care and raises difficult questions about familial care and societal duty but frames it. Italian director Giovanni Totaro’s feature debut is Happy Winter (also playing Antenna 2018), a profile of holidaymakers at Palermo’s Mondello beach struggling to maintain the appearance of social status and wealth in the wake of the economic crisis. Both filmmakers tackle difficult, heavily-charged political issues. Erick and Giovanni will share how they brought these difficult stories to the screen in a way that resonates with audiences.
