Mariela Castro, the daughter of Cuban President and advocate for the rights of transgender people, invites surgeons from Europe to travel to Havana annually to conduct sex reassignment surgery. However, there are only five places available each time, and Odette, Juani, and Malú are all on the waiting list. Director Daniel Abma (Beyond Wriezen, Antenna 2013) follows them over the space of a year as they wait and hope. Transit Havana takes a personal look at the realities of trans people in Cuba and at the same time gives us a unique insight into a country in transition.
