Ghost Elephants (Closing Night)

Werner Herzog | USA | 2025 | 98 min

For over sixty years, Werner Herzog has been fascinated by human obsessions, dreams, and imagination. In Ghost Elephants, he continues this pursuit as he follows conservationist Dr Steve Boyes — who seeks to document the existence of “ghost elephants,” a legendary herd of giants said to have vanished into myth — into Angola’s mist-shrouded highlands. Guided by master trackers from Namibia, Boyes’s expedition becomes more than a scientific pursuit; it is a journey into the limits of knowledge and the mysteries of faith, myth, and nature itself. Filmed with Herzog’s characteristic blend of awe and inquiry, the search for these unseen creatures transforms into a meditation on the human desire to chase what may never be found. Lyrical and haunting, Ghost Elephants asks whether some wonders are best left as dreams.
