Cesária Évora follows the struggles and success of the world-renowned singer known as the Barefoot Diva. Born in colonial Cape Verde and raised in extreme poverty, Cesária Évora always loved to sing. When she ran away from the orphanage and ended up on the street, when she fought for her right to live freely, when she sank into long depressive episodes – singing was what kept her going. Featuring rare footage and recordings of Évora’s music, the film shows the singer from her island childhood through to grand concerts in front of thousands of fans around the world. However, rather than focusing exclusively on performances, the majority of the archival material is personal footage filmed by those close to her, allowing us to spend time with and come to know Évora in her own words. In these many personal moments, Évora holds firm to her most important value—her absolute need to be free.
