Aaron Brookner, Rodrigo Areias | 2025 | UK, Portugal | 78 min
Nova ’78 is an electrifying plunge into 1970s counter-culture, constructed from long-lost 16mm footage of the legendary ‘Nova Convention’ in New York, which celebrated William S. Burroughs’ return after decades abroad. Bringing together icons such as Patti Smith, Frank Zappa, Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Allen Ginsberg, John Cage and more, the event now resurfaces through the directorial lens of Aaron Brookner and Rodrigo Areias. Their film doesn’t simply present a found documentation of the event — it immerses us in the collision of art, music, performance, and philosophy that defined the cultural moment — a dazzling time capsule that celebrates the enduring power of uncompromised creative freedom.
