The Villages in Florida is now the fastest growing “town” in America. With 155,000 inhabitants, 54 golf courses and 70 swimming pools — all impeccably maintained — it’s almost the size of Manhattan. Provided every convenience to enjoy their twilight years, its retiree residents have no reason to ever leave this sun- drenched, gated paradise. But what at first glance appears to be the fulfilment of the American dream cracks upon closer inspection. After all, maintaining this bubble has a price not only for its inhabitants, but also for the world around them. With humour and fun, director Valerie Blankenbyl dives into this parallel universe of carefree living to create an engaging documentary on an extraordinary social experiment, asking questions not only about our views on ageing, but also about our sense of self-entitlement.
