Vedette is a cow. Vedette is a queen. In fact, she once was the queen of queens, high in the pastures in the heart of the Swiss Alps. But Vedette is getting old and what does it do to a female when she’s discounted because of her age? In order to spare her the humiliation of being dethroned by younger rivals, her owners ask filmmakers Claudine Bories and Patrice Chagnard (Rules of the Game, Antenna 2014) to care for the feisty bovine for a summer. But will she come to accept their companionship? Perhaps even friendship? Stunningly shot with a fairytale feel, Vedette is a film made with love, inviting us to look afresh at the animals — both cows and humans — we usually take for granted.
