In this small town in the far north of Russia, life’s not easy. Winters are dark and freezing, and summers are not very welcoming either, but dozens of locals have made second homes for themselves in a stretch of tiny garages. Here, they can pretend they are soldiers fighting in World War II, build monstrous vehicles, play musical instruments, drink, get away from everyone or dig endless underground tunnels. In this beautiful filmed festival-favourite, director Natalija Yefimkina turns the lens on these “garage people”, following their absurd yet oddly calming reality. Each one of them designs their own sealed space to escape everyday life but when the doors open they reveal entire worlds, surprisingly colourful and filled with beauty and humour.
