Can the world be locked in a single film frame? Is it possible to meet an entire cross-section of people
by putting the camera in a fixed place? From his balcony, director Paweł Łozin ́ski directs his gaze at the sidewalk in front of his apartment building. On this grey strip of pavement, sandwiched between dull green grass and a tall wire fence, a colourful procession of locals, relatives, passers-by and homeless people walk by. Łozin ́ski tries to strike up a conversation with everyone. He asks who they are, what they do
and what they think about the meaning of life. Whether hurrying or strolling, happy or thoughtful, posing or quite natural, each of the participants who happen to come into view reveals something special.
The Balcony Movie is a radical return to the beginnings of cinema, when we first approached the camera. Maybe it’s enough to stop for a moment to discover a deeper insight?
